What on earth happened?

Democracy in South Africa is still in its infancy.
It is only 21 years since the first democratic elections.

Compare that with the USA - their first elections were held in 1788, although women and slaves were not entitled to vote..
Or the United Kingdom, where voting took place from as early as 1688, although only some men were allowed to vote. True democratic elections only took place after women were given the vote.
Or Australia - their first elections for the Federal Parliament were in 1901.
Or New Zealand. Although not everyone was allowed to vote until about 50 years later (New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote), they held their first elections in 1853.

But even in the short time we have been a democracy, a lot has happened - here in South Africa, and in the world.

And we are part of that History.

Share some of the things that have happened in your country in the years from 1990 to 2011.

A lot has happened in South Africa after 1990. After the banning of apartheid, our national teams were given the privilege to compete against other international teams in competitions like the olympic games and also to participate in world cup tournaments. We were also able to host a number of succesful world cup tournaments the most recent one is the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

  2. Apartheid is an Afrikaans word meaning separateness. It was a legal system whereby people were classified into racial groups. White, black, Indian and coloured were put into different homelands. Apartheid laws were part of South Africa’s legal systems from 1948 to 1994. South Africa’s first democratic elections were held in April 1994 and shone out like a beacon. In an era when politicians were generally held in profound contempt. The new state president, at that time, Nelson Mandela shone his grace on our nation. He at the least of all countries there was a story of a happy ending as the new rainbow nation stepped proudly into the future. The superb victory served by the ANC, national party, marked the struggle for which Nelson Mandela and other leaders spent 27 years in jail. It has been an extreme democratic revolution in South Africa filled with a lot of tears and pain but at the end we endowed a successful political system in our nation.
Over the last 21 years we look back and reflect on what has happened and stand at amazement on our great achievement in politics. We have walked a milestone to reach a good political institution. We reflect on how much equality has been established and how people can vote for any political group.

  3. Education in South Africa has improved between the early 90’s and today. Our education has not yet reached the place where many would want it to be, but I am proud to say that it is improving. The use of English in both urban and rural areas has gone up between black children; some rural schools now have proper computer and learning equipment. The pass rates of schools in the Eastern Cape and around the country has gone up by at least 7% from 2009. The only problem is the amount of matriculants who do not have money for university fees. South Africa has done itself proud by the amount of improvements that have been made in this department, though I hope this is the beginning of a successful education system.

  4. NATURAL DISASTERS
South Africa is an old geological country; it is a country that lies on the African plate. The tectonic plate boundary lays far away from the continent its self. Due to the fact the boundary lays far away from South Africa not many natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunami, and volcanoes and new destructive land forms occur in South Africa, In south Africa not many disasters have happened over the last 21 years (1990-2011) but a earthquake did occur once before in the Tulbagh (western cape) in 1969.Due to global warming and the change in south Africans temperature, they has been a lot of rain causing floods in the beginning of 2011 in Ladysmith kwa-Zulu-natal.

  5. The cricket events that have been happening in South Africa for the past 21 years are:
South Africa hosted the 2003 cricket world cup, it was the first time South Africa hosted this event unfortunately the South African team lost the title to Australia.
In 2007 South Africa hosted cricket's inaugural Twenty20 World Championships; there was so much vibe and energy. South Africa then hosted the 2009 DLF Indian premier league. The event was supposed to be hosted in INDIA but there were safety issues in the country. The event took place in six cities. The 2009 ICC Champions Trophy was also not scheduled for South Africa but for Sri lanka. The country also had safety issues so the event was hosted in south Africa and New Zealand won.
